Weekly MMM - On Passover & Universal Consciousness

Mystical Musical Meditations in Jerusalem

For my MMM this week when Passover begins, I want to talk about the Universal Consciousness elements that are unique to Passover, but we can work on them all year long. I have a short list of them and will share a few now:

1) G-d wants to reveal where He is hidden. This is the whole purpose of getting out of Egypt and it’s what Passover is all about. G-d is asking us to reveal Him, G-d, where G-d is normally not found.

We are told, “you are my witnesses,” that’s what it says in one of our blessings. We have to testify, to witness to what other people have not seen. We all have to testify, to reveal, to show where G-d is normally not found. That’s Passover.

2) Mega-lights – That’s how G-d got us out of Egypt. He just zapped Pharoah and the Egyptians, and blinded them with this incredible, Divine light. They weren’t ready for it, nobody was ready for it. It killed the Egyptians and it freed the Jews.

We need to learn how to harness the Divine light and to receive it to free ourselves again now. When we can get it, we can use it to jump out of whatever trap we may be stuck in.

3) We were born as the Israelite people on Passover, so it’s time for each of us to get ourselves born into something new, something we have not entered into before.

4) The Israelite slaves began the process of redemption with wordless screams. It wasn’t prayer, it was screams, it was wordless. G-d said, “I heard their screams, Moses, so you go tell Pharoah to let them go.” G-d caused the people to scream in the first place, but He attributed it to them, as G-d often does.

So, Passover is a time for primal screaming and also for zerizut, which can best be described as alacrity, zeal or enthusiasm. It represents going fast, not delaying by messing around. When you have to do something, go for it.

When a mitzvah comes to you, don’t delay. Jump on it, do it. As our Sages say, “don’t let it be chametz,” which is what we try to avoid eating on Passover and which represents indulgence. Don’t indulge! Jump in and do it, go for it! Just go for it, that’s a big lesson on Passover consciousness.

5) As regards counting the Omer, we will get into this topic later, but for now we just need to know that it’s about the Sephirot and how they change our lives. And this happens along with Passover.

6) Another important element of Passover is speaking. We speak on the night of Passover because that’s when the Israelites received the gift of speaking. The more we speak, the more of a purification process we undergo. We have to speak our way into consciousness, that’s a basic Passover thing.

7) The difference between matzah and chametz is significant. It represents the difference between indulgence and not indulging. This is related to “when it’s time to jump, jump…” To the extent that we do that, and we avoid indulgence, good things will happen for us.

8) The unique freedom of Passover is what I call our, “servant of G-d freedom.” It’s a freedom that comes with responsibility. There are other freedoms, but this one is unique to Passover.

9) We are called to become a nation that’s above nature. To do that, we have to connect with the part of ourselves that is already above nature.
